Stagecraft to Making Gardens
“The garden is the stage where we craft a story with plants to play amongst nature.”
Oliver Roberts
Stagecraft Gardens Limited
Director and Designer
Oliver transferred into horticulture six years ago. His background in theatre production has uniquely influenced his approach to his horticulture company, blending storytelling and spatial awareness into his projects.
Oliver achieved a distinction in Practical Horticulture from the Norfolk School of Gardening, and he has worked in plant nurseries in propagation and plant growing. He has experience in plant retail, working in garden centres, and has worked at horticultural shows, including the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival in 2025.
Oliver started professionally in maintenance gardening in 2020 while living in London, working on high-end gardens throughout West London with the maintenance team from West Six Garden Centre in Hammersmith.
He began his stage lighting career at the National Theatre, later freelancing in London and Manchester. This led to his joining the BBC, where he worked on live broadcasts, including Live8 in Hyde Park, the 60th Anniversary of VE Day in Trafalgar Square, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee at Buckingham Palace.
Building on this production experience, Oliver now combines theatre with gardening and planting design, bringing spatial awareness, storytelling, creativity, and professionalism to horticulture and inspiring confidence in his approach.
Blending his theatrical creativity with his passion for the outdoors, Oliver founded his company early in 2024. He is committed to continuous growth, drawing on his experience as an inspiring designer and storyteller to bring fresh ideas into the garden.
Oliver continues his ongoing professional development with the RHS and the British Academy of Garden Design to keep up to date with the horticultural practices we need to apply today.
